Response: New Media in Art Ch1: 39-50pgs

In chapter 1, New Media in Art by Michael Rush mentions a performance of beating a guitar on themselves until it disintegrated. And this reminded me of David Blaine when he would perform his extreme isolation meditation. Like with the ice tomb, standing 100-foot high, 22-in wide pillar, submerged in water and buried alive. He did these while filming for a tv show pushing his limits of the audience reactions. Another trick that comes to mind is the ice pick through the hand or arm in front of people. There is this raw emotion of disgust with doubt because that it can't be real? Right?

"Self-Portrait" by Ashley Montes

Self-Portrait, Dadaism, Ash "I wanted to create something mashed together of my family into one image of me. I used digital hand-drawn my head and basic features. And I did the same for the denim jacket that I wear too much. The blue is my favorite color and it also represents calm personality. And the style I used was Dadaism because I thought it was silly, weird and fits my humor. And the images of eyes, ear, mouth, and chin are old photos of my siblings and parents. Then later added some patches of my favorite things or elements about me."

Austin Lee, New York artist

AUSTIN LEE, FEELS GOOD, JEFFREY DEITCH, NEW YORK, 2019. Austin Lee is New Yorker based artist that smashed together" abstraction and figuration, humor and pathos, in his exuberantly expressive and utterly contemporary paintings and sculptures" (artsy.net).  I was intrigued by the vibrant, neon colors and silly contemporary paintings. What is nice to hear is his artwork is traveling to an art museum,  M Woods , Beijing, China the exhibition "Human Nature". As well as three new commissioned sculptures.

Response: New Media in Art: Ch1 "Media and Performance" pgs 28-38

In the book, New Media in Art pgs 28-38, one of the things that I thought was interesting was how performance art got its start. And it was Jackson Pollock  Lucio Fantana, and Shimamoto (36). The action was art. Canvas and painting were part of the medium of the performance. And some artists would record there performance and play them during the show. Which i thought was smart of them to do because it gives the audience a chance to see how the artist works. And perhaps the paint on canvas or whatever material was painted on was not the main focus. I love to splatter paint when I'm feeling anxious, angry, or even sad because its fun to get it all out on the canvas.

Easy Street Records & Cafe

This weekend I went to an awesome record store in Seattle called Easy Street Records. Man oh, oh man was I was in vinyl record heaven, at first glance the store had some records, merch, and cafe. And I was a little excited to fully know to expect, so I checked out a few bins seeing that it was a marked sale. And some rows wrapped around the upper level which was small but it had a whole lot of vinyl records. Words cannot explain the feeling in a record store and a great one for that matter. But what made this store worth the trip was the number of rare records that you cannot find at Best Buy, Barnes n Nobles, Wal-Mart or Adventure Land Comics store. This place is my top favorite record store aside from RIP "Off the Record" which unfortunately went out business.

The Witcher, Netflix series

Awesome series if you liked playing the video game or if you appreciate fantasy shows. I loved this show a couple reasons the folklore and mythology behind the monsters the Witcher fights. There is also nice duel storyline of a powerful Witch’s journey but still leaves some mystery to her character development. The setting and special effects are so beautiful and well done.  They do not take away from the story. I recommend this show if you have time for it. If your like me and start a show but can’t help watch it in less than a week. Binge worth show.

Response: "New Media in Art" Intro: Pgs18-28

In the book, New Media in Art , by Michael Rush mentions Sergei Eisenstein, film director and theorist developed a new way to express the Avant-Garde cinema. Rush states Sergei's work was a clear product of the "interplay of art, technology, and life during the Soviet avant-garde period" (18).  Using vibrant processes of editing (cinematography montage) he could manipulate emotions through this newly discovered technique. He wanted to view the world in cinema a parallel way under Marxism. Sergei stated "a new society meant a new kind of vision; that the way people saw things must be altered; that it was insufficient to put new material before old eyes" in other words there is no growth with someone of the older generation because they are set in their ideals unchanged by time. Similar to showing older generation new contemporary art and them not understanding what makes so powerful, for example, Andy Warhol "Chicken Noodle Soup" painting was beautiful

NFL, Fox, and Cable Tv

Did anybody catch the game yesterday? I didn't due to unfortunate events or black-out channel with particular cable tv. I’m sure a lot of football fans could not watch the game—unless they stream live. And you tried to view the channel a lovely person would explain to you why the NFL is no longer available. “We offered Fox to extend the contract, with payment, until after the Super Bowl on February 2 to ensure the best possible customer experience for the remainder of the NFL season, but Apollo & Fox refused this offer (my.dish.com). They go on to say that Fox does not care about the consumer and only thinking about making money “they don’t care how high a customer’s bill gets and are just trying to squeeze every last penny out of consumers to recoup the billions they spent on buying these stations.” but Dish actual cares about their customers. Sounds kind of fishy to me. The statement continues to say Dish offered Fox to continue playing the games while the ongoing negations.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

First thoughts on this museum George Lucas is only showing his artwork from his Star Wars films now owned by Disney but it is better than what I initially thought. It is an art museum that presents visual storytelling through illustrations, paintings, comic art and in-depth exploration of the arts of filmmaking(storyboards, costumes, animation, visual effects)( lucasmuseum.org ). Challenging the way people view art museums varies collections of digital art, cinema, and narrative. Recently the museum acquired the Separate Cinema Archive, a collection of 37,000 objects documenting African  American cinema history from 1094 to the present day (Sarah Cascone, artnet.com, 2020 ) . It is great to see that there is diversity in the art museum, which unfortunately sometimes we do not see in high art museums. What I thought was amazing was that the museum wants to include new films and filmmakers as well sharing historic films. Here's to hoping they follow through on this inclusion of diver

Response to New Media In Art: Introduction: Pg7-18

In the book, New Media in Art,  by Michael Rush mentions artists in the last century are experimenting more with mix media (7).  Incorporating readymade objects, personal trinkets, and recyclable objects, focusing on the emotion rather than technical skills. Rush references a famous artist, Marcel Duchamp that changed the focus of what is a fine art. Duchamp for example famous piece controversial "fountain" sculpture was not considered art because it was ready-made that had no creat. However, it is an art because it was Duchamp protest towards the Art Galleries and Museums because who are they decide what is art. Art does not have definitive rules of what qualifies as art, there might be tasteful art and distasteful art (22). I think it should be up to the artist and audience to consider what is art, tasteful otherwise.
